Story Highlight
  • PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst blamed Bluepoint’s closure on the overall economic condition of the gaming industry.
  • The Joint Sony CEO admitted that profits have increased, but the company has to adapt.
  • Moreover, Hulst assured fans that PlayStation is heading in the right direction and will continue to deliver exceptional content.

The PS5 generation has seen a series of horrible missteps from Sony. From its emphasis on live-service titles to the lack of single-player exclusives, the Japanese giant has failed to hit the mark on many occasions. The closure of Bluepoint Games yesterday was another entry in this miserable record.

Fans have been taken aback by the sudden shutdown of the developer and raised questions about Sony’s current direction. If you ask PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst, however, he is very confident in the brand’s future and the ongoing path it’s taking.

Why It Matters: PlayStation is suffering from misplaced priorities, as Sony could have poured the billions it spent on live-service failures to keep talented developers like Bluepoint afloat.

Bluepoint Games developed the Demon’s Souls remake for PS5.

In a staff email obtained by Kotaku, Hermen Hulst revealed that Bluepoint’s closure is due to the industry’s challenging environment. The PlayStation Studios president admitted that the company had a magnificent Q3, but due to broader economic conditions and slow industry growth, the studio had to be shut down.

We’re operating in an increasingly challenging industry environment. Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably. As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.

Hulst, who is also the joint CEO of Sony, went on to say that the gaming giant has to adapt in the current environment, as even rising profits aren’t enough to counteract the bloated budgets and other economic caveats of the industry that are making game development increasingly unsustainable.

In addition, the PlayStation boss assured fans that he is confident in the current direction the company is heading in, stating that building unforgettable experiences is still at the core of PlayStation Studios.

Bluepoint spent years developing the canned God of War live-service game.

Regardless, considering how the Sony leadership wasted Bluepoint’s talent by making them work on a now-canceled God of War multiplayer title for years, that statement won’t be easily accepted.
