Original Halo Dev Unhappy With Campaign Evolved, Calls Remakes Soul Destroying Cash Grabs

Griesemer Feels Sorry For Devs Working On The Game.

Story Highlight
  • Jaime Griesemer, the designer of the original title, has criticised Halo Campaign Evolved.
  • The dev called the remake soul-destroying and the entire project a cash grab.
  • He also stated that devs working on the game will get no credit and that he feels sorry for them.

Halo has started its comeback tour by announcing the remake of Combat Evolved, the first game in the series, and revealing that the franchise will be heading to PlayStation from now on for the first time.

The reception of this groundbreaking news has been mixed, and the new Halo leadership has also come under fire for using generative AI in development. And, if you asked devs of the 2001 original, this latest remake is soulless at best.

Why it matters: Remakes being hated for being uninspired by the original Halo’s designer is a terrible reflection on the IP and AAA gaming as a whole.

Halo: Combat Evolved’s designer is not happy with the remake.

Jaime Griesemer, a designer on Halo: Combat Evolved, posted on X to criticise the Campaign Evolved remake, saying that he feels sorry for the devs working on the project, and that it is only being done for the money.

Griesmer clarified his opinion further in the replies, stating that Halo Campaign Evolved is a soulless remake and the idea of remasters in general is “soul-destroying.” He called out the level design in the replies, saying the team had no vision, which is a major red flag.

The lead designer of Halo 2 was also critical of the mission in the gameplay showcase, explaining he put rocks in the way so the Warthog couldn’t steamroll the hunters, as he wanted players to fight them on foot, something the remake is missing.

Halo Campaign Evolved is meant to be a modern take on the original, with sprint mechanics and new additions introducing the franchise to a new era. But, there is concern among fans that the IP is losing its essence by trying to pander to a new audience.

Leadership issues are already a massive concern at Halo Studios, and with a Fortnite-style multiplayer title also rumored to be in the works, one can only wonder where the legendary FPS IP is heading.
