Over A Million Units Sold In 3 Months!

Octopath Traveler 2 is a JRPG developed by Asano Games, featuring unique 2D-HD aesthetics and unique combat. The game was released for Switch and various platforms on February 24, 2023.

According to its official Twitter account, Octopath Traveler 2 has now sold over 1 million copies within three months of its launch. The tweet also featured a celebratory artwork.

Why It Matters: Octopath Traveler is among the best JRPG offerings in recent years, with fans praising the game for its aesthetic and gameplay.

While the first entry launched as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, Octopath Traveler 2 was released on multiple platforms to achieve better sales.

However, the first entry sold 1 million units within just two weeks on Nintendo Switch alone. Despite many claiming Octopath Traveler 2 to be better than its prequel, the game has been slower in sales.

Octopath Traveler 2 was published and marketed by Square Enix, unlike the first entry, which was published and advertised by Nintendo. The game’s underwhelming sales could be attributed to poor marketing by Square Enix.

Despite positive reviews, Team Asano’s other releases, Live A Live Remake and Triangle Strategy, also did not perform very well in terms of sales. This may lead to Square Enix rethinking its strategy for future 2D-HD games.

While a third entry in the franchise is possible, the Director of the game, Keisuke Miyauchi, stated he plans to take a break before another Octopath Traveler game.
