Could Be Really Helpful For VRAM Limitaions In Games!

Story Highlight
  • Nvidia’s neural rendering tech aims to compress textures, leading to less VRAM usage.
  • In the company’s demonstration, it was able to cut the VRAM utilization by 85%.
  • If implemented correctly, the tech could be revolutionary for GPUs with limited VRAM.

Nvidia has been a frontrunner in the technology department in recent years. Whether most people like it or not, over the years, it has introduced revolutionary tech features, the most prominent of which is its AI upscaling, DLSS.

Now, the company is preparing to launch DLSS 5, but more importantly, it has revealed details about its latest Neural Rendering technology, which, apart from other benefits, cuts VRAM usage by up to 85% in gaming.

Why it matters: Gaming has become highly demanding, with VRAM posing a significant optimization challenge. We’ve seen that even 8GB is no longer enough, based on some recent titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Nvidia headlined the GTC 2026 with its neural rendering technology. It is called Neural Texture Compression, and what it essentially does is it kind of creates smaller neural engines, instead of one doing all the work.

The tech giants showcased this using a Tuscan Villa scene. Using the standard BCN-compression textures took about 6.5GB of VRAM, whereas using NTC textures took just 970MB, cutting the usage by 85%.

Additionally, it also uses Neural Materials, which, like NTC, compresses material behavior, so they don’t take as many channels as traditional materials. This could be revolutionary for GPUs with limited VRAM.

It isn’t clear if it’ll make its way over to older GPUs, but people who have 8GB GPUs like the RTX 5060 or the 5060 Ti 8GB will likely benefit from it. DLSS 5 has been controversial, but this is something many will appreciate.
