Monster Hunter Wilds Visuals Look PS3-Level And Run Poorly On Mid-Range GPUs, Testing Reveals

Game Not Recommended For Players With 8GB VRAM GPU!

Story Highlight
  • New testing has revealed that Monster Hunter Wilds looks and runs poorly on RTX 4060 while using AMD’s 9800X3D at 1440p.
  • The high textures look disappointing and take time to load, and there is a lot of camera stutter and frame rate dips.
  • The RTX 4070 struggles with similar issues with minor improvements in base frame rates.

Monster Hunter Wilds has been hugely popular. The RPG has crossed over a million concurrent players in only a single day, but its reviews are ‘Mixed’ on Steam; there’s a good reason for that.

Detailed testing of Monster Hunter Wilds on PC has revealed that the game looks disappointing and runs poorly on mid-range GPUs because of texture and performance issues. And all this while the entry is using AMD’s high-end Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU.

Why it matters: While Monster Hunter Wilds is excellent gameplay-wise, the game’s performance is struggling a lot on PCs using mid-range GPUs. The texture issues also make the visuals look pretty hideous.

Digital Foundry found that Monster Hunter Wilds is full of low-res textures and camera stutters while using RTX 4060. Keep in mind the game is running at 1440p with default settings and no frame gen, while DLSS is set to balanced. The testing revealed horrible frame rate dips during normal gameplay.

These stutters only improve when the textures are set to low, which makes the game look like it’s from the PS3 era. Even RTX 4070 does not improve the performance of Monster Hunter Wilds besides providing a bit higher frame rates.

The RPG on 4070 was full of stuttering despite only high texture settings being used. The highest texture setting that unlocks at launch would run even worse given the current circumstances. However, the bad performance is allegedly not because of VRAM.

The tester theorizes that MHW is struggling with DirectStorage GPU decompression. The game is streaming and decompressing textures on the GPU in an overly aggressive manner when the camera is turned.

Despite hiccups, Monster Hunter Wilds showed signs of success months before launch.

So that’s why there’s such a huge disconnect between visuals and the amount of performance issues. Digital Foundry does not recommend the game for PC players with mid-range GPUs. However, these issues might be patched in the future updates.

Do you think these performance issues in Monster Hunter Wilds will continue to be resolved in the future updates, or is it another PC port disaster? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
