“Studios Have Moved Away From Taking Films As Inspiration”

Story Highlight
  • MindsEye aims to deliver a linear and cinematic-driven gameplay.
  • Developers behind the game say that video games have stopped drawing inspiration from films.
  • The game will last around 15 hours and will be respectful of players’ time, even in their busy schedules.

While GTA 6 may still be months away, former Rockstar developers are now working on a game of their own, which will surely ease the wait till then. MindsEye is a third-person action game that, on paper, resembles GTA, but is more akin to the Max Payne series, offering a shorter narrative experience.

Set for a June 6, 2025, release, extensive details on the game are now emerging. The developer team behind MindsEye recently revealed that they aim to deliver a linear, shorter, and cinematic experience with the game.

Why it matters: One of the main reasons behind the success of games like GTA, The Last of Us, and others is their cinematic approach, which immerses players in their story.

MindsEye Will Cost $60, Unlike Most AAA Titles

Speaking to Eurogamer, Adam Whiting, assistant game director at studio BARB, stated that modern-day video games have stopped drawing inspiration from films, and that this art form has been lost.

I think there’s ways to engage an audience with a video game that you can’t necessarily do with a movie or a TV show

He also acknowledged that video games are becoming increasingly expensive to produce and that, most of the time, publishers are chasing live-service trends, leaving little room for making cinematic games.

Adam also emphasised the importance of meaningful, well-paced, and well-constructed stories in a video game that involve character development and moments of tension, which will truly respect players’ time, especially after they tune in to the game after a long workday.

The 2010s Was The Golden Age For Narrative-Driven Games

This is where MindsEye comes in. The game will deliver a shorter 15-hour experience with a linear gameplay style, despite the developer earlier saying that it features a faux open world.

In an era where publishers eagerly create bloated RPGs offering hundreds of hours of gameplay to finish, MindsEye aims to take things back to the earlier days of cinematic gameplay.
