- The Metal Gear Solid franchise has now sold 65.1 million copies overall.
- Sales of Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake are speculated to be less than 2 million.
- Konami is interested in more remakes and is also looking for Kojima’s replacement.
Konami has finally returned to the Metal Gear Solid franchise after nearly a decade of silence with a remake of the third entry. Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake has been off to a strong start, even managing to sell a million copies within 24 hours of launch.
The entire franchise has now been pushed to 65 million sales total. Thanks to this push by Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, it’s almost guaranteed that Konami will further pursue the franchise with new entries.
Why it matters: The Kojima-created stealth series has been regarded as a pioneer for modern titles in the same genre. Over 65 million sales put the franchise among gaming’s best-sellers.

As of earlier this year, before the release of Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, the franchise had sold 63.3 million copies. Currently, the figure is at 65.1 million copies, up by 1.8 million sales since the last quarter.
This also means that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake is yet to sell 2 million copies overall.
While fewer than 2 million sales aren’t decent enough as per today’s standards, critically, Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake was received quite well. As such, Konami is now letting fans decide for themselves what remake should come next via surveys.

Initially launched in 1987, the franchise has been handled by Hideo Kojima. However, the director departed from Konami soon after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5 due to a fallout. Now, the Japanese publisher is looking for a replacement director but is open to working with Kojima again, although that is unlikely to happen.
