Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Includes Instant Switching In Free Roam

Switch Between Miles And Peter Instantly!

The PlayStation Showcase finally showed the long-awaited gameplay for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Prior to the gameplay demo, many had expected the game to feature a switching mechanic between Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

This switching mechanic was seen during the scripted mission, but many were still curious if the switching would be available during free-roam in the open world. In a recent interview, Insomniac Games has now confirmed instant switching between the two Spider-Man characters in the open world.

Why it matters: Spider-Man 2 is raising the stakes with more than one playable character. While previous Spider-Man games have featured multiple characters, they did not allow instant switching.

During a recent interview with Eurogamer, Spider-Man 2 Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, elaborated on the switching.

“You’ll be able to – in the open world – freely switch between them with a simple button press.”

The developer explained that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 contains content designed for both characters, but players are free to switch between them at any time. Insomniac Games already showed this ability during the story mission, but in the open world of New York, players are free to switch at any time.

Previously, games like GTA 5 included a similar mechanic, but it took several seconds to switch characters. However, the PS5’s SSD means that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 does not have to deal with any loading screens when switching.

Furthermore, each character has a unique skill tree, and one skill tree is also shared between the two. As such, Insomniac Games has included three skill trees in the game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still slated for Fall 2023. A release date for the game was not announced at the PlayStation Showcase, but fans can expect to learn more in the months leading up to launch.
