Larian Dev Strikes Back Against Square Enix’s AI Plans; Says It’s Stupid To Outsource QA To AI

Larian Not In Favor of Replacing Jobs With AI!

Story Highlight
  • Square Enix plans to hand over 70% of its QA to AI in the future.
  • A Larian developer believes this is a stupid idea since QA is still very important to game development.
  • He suggests QA roles can even open the path to more important positions in game development.

Square Enix, like many of the industry’s other developers, recently confirmed its plans to invest in AI for development. In particular, the Japanese giant behind Final Fantasy hopes to outsource most of its QA work to AI in the coming years.

However, not everyone saw eye to eye with this announcement. In fact, Larian’s publishing director noted that this decision is a ‘stupid’ one.

Why it matters: AI’s role in game development has led to many interesting conversations over the last year or so, with many developers standing on both sides.

Michael Douse from Larian recently noted that QA teams are among the most involved in the gaming industry.

He then went on to say that AI and automation are not inherently bad for these departments, but the idea that AI can replace them entirely is not the wisest.

According to Douse, QA departments and community teams go hand in hand. Moreover, he says that while QA might be an entry-level position, it can help developers eventually land designer and other key roles in the industry.

Therefore, he is completely against the idea of handing QA over to artificial intelligence, even if it may save costs in the long run.

The idea that QA people can be replaced at a large scale is stupid because it supposes that the conversation with them can be replaced.

Square Enix Gen AI

Of course, Larian itself has said little about using AI in the future. The team is making steady progress on its next game, which it believes won’t be available anytime before 2029.

Till then, Baldur’s Gate 3 remains one of the finest RPGs of the modern era for players to lose themselves in.

What do you make of the Larian developer’s stance on AI? Do you think AI should be used to replace human teams at big studios? Let’s discuss the implications of AI becoming a part of development in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
