Introduced in 1996 as the protagonist of the first Tomb Raider game, fans loved the character from the start, and she slowly became an icon. Now, Lara Croft has received 2 Guinness World Records, marking a major achievement. 

Why it matters: Lara Croft is among the most popular gaming characters ever, along with the likes of Arthur Morgan, Geralt, Joel Miller, Leon Kennedy, Cloud Strife, and more, based on how well she has always been written and portrayed. 

Guinness has shared that Lara Croft now holds the record for the best-selling video game heroine, as well as the record for the video game character with the most magazine cover appearances, in publications like Newsweek and Time. 

Lara has been on the magazine cover for a record 2300 times as of April 2025. Moreover, the total sales of the games since their 1996 release have surpassed 100 million units, highlighting Lara’s pop culture popularity. 

The archaeologist and explorer has also been a central figure in many female protagonists and has inspired many future games. Overall, her influence in the gaming industry has been huge since her introduction.
