I’ll never forget the day I decided to toss away my old PC. It had gotten slow, was outdated, and was collecting dust in the corner of my room. Right before I found the PC in the attic, my family was planning on holding a get-together to share old memories and videos. That’s when I had the idea to repurpose it as a media server. After some quick research, I realized I didn’t even require any hardware upgrades, and all I had to do was get through a slightly complicated setup process.

All you need to turn your old PC into a media server is to download a few applications that allow it to be used as a broadcasting hub. In my case, I chose Plex due to its excessive features and affordable pricing packages. Moreover, the application doesn’t require you to have a fancy PC; with the minimum requirements sitting at an Intel Core i3 and 4GB RAM.

My old PC on the other hand, is slightly overkill for a media server, having an Intel i5-2400, 8GB DDR4 RAM, and a GTX 1050 Ti with around 1TB HDD and a 256GB NVMe storage. Anyway, after installing and setting up Plex, my PC was ready to stream movies and videos to any device in my home.

Don’t Want A Media Server? More Uses For An Old PC

In case a media server doesn’t interest you and you want to use your hardware for other purposes, here are a few ways you can repurpose your old PC depending on its capabilities:

• Home Security System: If you recently bought new CCTV cameras, you can convert your old PC into a home surveillance system with free software, such as ZoneMinder.
• Gaming Server: Depending on the games you play and your PC’s specifications, you can repurpose your old PC as a gaming server and host multiplayer games for you and your friends.
• Backup Server: Another use for an old PC with lots of free storage can be to use it as a backup server to save all your important files and memories.
• Learning Platform: If you have kids, I recommend installing a few educational software and using the PC as a learning resource. You can also start teaching them about computers from a young age through practical demonstrations.
• DIY Projects: Lastly, you can explore various DIY projects and experiment with an old system to learn how computer hardware works without worrying about something breaking down. You can also set up a personal cloud server or experiment with Linux.

Easy Steps To Get Started

Repurposing your old PC is easier than you think, which is how my old PC saved the day and a lot of money. The first thing you want to do is clean off all the dust from inside your PC. Blow it off and get it into working condition.

Secondly, I recommend stress testing your hardware to assess its condition. Check the temperatures and whether all the fans are spinning correctly. Re-apply thermal paste if you have to and replace the cables in case they’re worn out.

Depending on how you’re trying to repurpose the PC, slight upgrades should be fine. Get a new hard drive, upgrade your RAM, buy an SSD, or get a new air cooler. Then choose the software you need and set it up. There are plenty of guides and resources to help with the setup.
