Helldivers 2 Studio Now Developing Self-Funded New Action IP in Unreal Engine

Arrowhead's Next Project Is Based On A New IP!

Story Highlight
  • Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Studios has been planning its next game for some time, revealing that it will be self-funded.
  • The team is now already hiring for a Senior System Designer to work on a new co-op action game.
  • The title will be based on a new IP and will require the role to have experience in Unreal Engine.

After amassing a dedicated group of fans with the original Helldivers, Arrowhead took the gaming scene by storm with the sequel’s addictive co-op gameplay loop two years ago. The game has come a long way via updates and has become one of the best live-service offerings.

However, the studio has also been planning on developing a whole new title on the side for a while. Now, we have found a job listing for a Senior System Designer, which mentions it to be a co-op action game based on a new IP.

Why it matters: After Arrowhead Studios already left a huge mark on the inflated live-service genre, fans are wishing to see another stellar hit from the team.

As mentioned in the listing, the Arrowhead Studios hiree would be required to have hands-on experience with Unreal Engine. This confirms the studio’s next game will likely utilize Unreal Engine 5 instead of Autodesk Stingray. It will also be developed with player focus in mind.

This is your chance to be part of an co-op action game from the start.

The unannounced entry will also focus heavily on combat reminiscent of the Arrowhead formula. Following the massive success of Helldivers 2, it is realistic to assume that the upcoming game will be similar in mechanics, based on the listing.

The focus being on a new IP also rules out rumors about Arrowhead working on Helldivers 3 or Magicka 3, as the past rumblings suggested.

And Arrowhead Studios will have free rein with the title since it is not funded by Sony this time around. So, we may see it released simultaneously across all platforms when it’s ready.

Helldivers 2 has been a staggering success for Arrowhead Studios.

This is the first job listing that directly references Arrowhead’s new project, so we can likely expect to learn specific details in the future. We do know that it will have a social hub space, similar to Destiny.

On a side note, Arrowhead wanted to develop its next game with a smaller team to keep the development process less chaotic. At best, the ambitious game is only entering pre-production at this point, so it is likely years away from launch based on these tidbits.

Do you think the next game from Arrowhead Studios will have a similar art style to Helldivers 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
