Unreal Engine 5 Transition Not Looking Good For Halo At The Moment!

Story Highlight
  • Halo Campaign Evolved is already showing Unreal Engine 5 traversal stutter in its demo footage.
  • This has been a recurring problem in games running on the technology, and it appears Halo is no different.
  • Many are hopeful that the stuttering will be ironed out by the time this remake arrives next year.

Halo Campaign Evolved has been officially announced, bringing an end to the exclusivity of Xbox’s big three titles. This new remake attempts to recapture Halo’s debut in the gaming market through an all-new lens, bringing the title to a new audience.

Halo Studios has also made the jump to Unreal Engine 5 for this title, but it seems this particular transition hasn’t gone too smoothly. The initial gameplay footage of Halo Campaign Evolved shows that the title suffers from the same type of stuttering seen in other games running on the same engine.

Why it matters: Stuttering has become a major problem plaguing modern PC titles, with every other game showing hitches and stutters.

Various examples of stuttering in Halo Campaign Evolved have begun to show up on platforms like Twitter.

The game appears to suffer from big frame-time spikes in both interiors and exteriors. Moreover, players who were able to go hands-on with the remake confirm that stuttering was not uncommon during the demo.

Similar observations have been made by the audience on Reddit, and the video above shows just one instance of a prominent mid-gameplay. Ultimately, it seems Unreal Engine 5’s trademark traversal stutter has made its way to Halo.

This is also interesting since Halo Infinite, which ran on 343 Industries’ Slipspace Engine, did not suffer from the same problem. The issue appears to have come about as a direct result of Halo Studios’ jump to a different technology, but not all hope is lost.

The good news is that Halo Campaign Evolved comes out next year, so the team has time to iron out technical hitches in the game. Perhaps the final product will present a stutter-free experience.

Other developers like CDPR are also attempting to come up with a solution to Unreal Engine 5’s prominent traversal stutter, something that should benefit all teams who rely on the engine moving forward.

However, till then, fans remain concerned about Halo Studios’ approach to finding a solution to the problem.
