- God of War Sons of Sparta was shadowdropped after the recent State of Play.
- It received mixed reviews and is now the lowest-rated Metacritic game in the series.
- Reviews call it an average experience, with the gameplay being generic and repetitive.
After so many rumors and speculations, a new God of War game is finally here. It isn’t a AAA, and instead is a toned-down Metroidvania exploring Kratos’s past. Unfortunately, the response to the title isn’t as positive as one would think.
God of War Sons of Sparta is currently the lowest-rated Metacritic game in the franchise. It even sits below God of War: Ascension, which also didn’t really have a universal positive reception.
Why it matters: God of War games are mostly associated with big budgets and a massive scope. This game doesn’t have either of those, so this is a step in a different direction, which isn’t sitting well with the fans.

On Metacritic, God of War Sons of Sparta has a user score of 7.4, which is the lowest in the franchise. Even this score isn’t bad; it is just average, which is something you don’t expect from arguably Sony’s most popular franchise.
The overall opinions on the game are quite mixed, with some praising it for expanding the franchise beyond just the mainline games, while others criticize it for being too bland, generic, and repetitive.
Some have even argued that if the “God of War” name wasn’t associated with it, it would be just another game on the PlayStation store. Even the series creator harshly called the project out, calling it nonsense.
At least the saving grace is that Sony also announced a God of War Greek Trilogy Remake at the same State of Play. So, fans will be eating well as we have a show, the remakes, and a rumored mainline game in development.
