  • The game has been praised for evolving the series’ open-world and delivering a hard-hitting narrative.
  • Elements like the pacing have been criticized.

Ghost of Yotei already had a huge wave of excitement leading into 2025. The game promised a sprawling open world and even more action-packed gameplay than its predecessor, giving fans plenty of reason to be excited about the upcoming release.

With mere days left before Ghost of Yotei finally hits PS5 consoles, the media has also shared official reviews. To nobody’s surprise, Sucker Punch’s latest work marks yet another well-received addition to the PS5’s official lineup.

Why it matters: PlayStation has set a high bar for its first-party lineup with past releases, but it continues to meet the each time.

At the time of writing, the game stands at an average score of 87/100 on Metacritic. Interestingly, this is the same score Ghost of Tsushima settled on. A few of the review scores are mentioned below:

  • VGC – 10/10
  • IGN – 8/10
  • GameSpot – 9/10
  • TheGamer – 8/10
  • Eurogamer – 6/10

Reviewers have praised the evolution of Sucker Punch’s open-world formula in Ghost of Yotei.

Where Ghost of Tsushima’s world was formulaic, Ghost of Yotei has made strides to present players with more freedom. At the same time, the game keeps its narrative grounded and avoids falling into the trap of open-ended progression from Assassin’s Creed.

Ghost of Yotei seems to do side quests particularly well, incentivizing these objectives with optional weapon unlocks that are incredibly powerful and effective throughout the main narrative missions. To nobody’s surprise, the art direction also remains a strong point of the franchise with this entry.

Moreover, Atsu’s narrative itself has received praise. Many have even claimed that Atsu has the potential to become one of PlayStation’s most recognized and iconic characters, which would put her in the same category as the likes of Kratos and Nathan Drake.

On the other hand, the pacing has been criticized. It is said that certain missions leading up to the big encounters can drag on for too long, an element that was criticized similarly in Ghost of Tsushima.

However, Ghost of Yotei stands out as a major triumph for Sucker Punch and PlayStation overall. What do you think of the reviews? Are you buying the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers Forums.
