On The Flip Side, EA Boss Said Veilguard Would Have Succeeded If It Was Live-Service!

Story Highlight
  • Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski took to Twitter to address recent live-service drama in the gaming scene.
  • He clarified that developers should focus on making single-player titles instead of turning existing franchises into live service.
  • He argues that not everything needs to be GaaS, an opinion that has continued to rise in popularity amid live service flops.

While recent developments may suggest that the live service genre is fading into obscurity, the reality could not be further from the truth. One in three developers is still working on live service games—even if many of them have failed or canceled mid-development.

Now, the Gears of War creator has addressed developers and said that they should keep focusing on single-player games. He’s asking not to turn existing single-player games and franchises into live services that no one asked for.

Why it matters: The words of Cliff Bleszinski have resonated with many gamers who have grown weary of the live service push made by major conglomerates like EA and Sony over the years, hurting many notable IPs in the process.

For those not in the know, Cliff Bleszinski is responding to the EA CEO drama where he claimed that the failed Dragon Age: The Veilguard might have succeeded if it was live service. His remarks generated a lot of backlash across the whole industry.

Almost everyone has supported Cliff’s remarks, with fans also praising regular multiplayer in Gears of War games

Marathon sony
Sony already slashed multiple live-service titles, with Bungie’s Marathon being one of the only survivors.

The Coalition is currently working on the next mainline Gears of War entry, which has a lot of players excited. And certainly, Gears of War: E-Day will stay clear of any controversial live service elements.
