PlayStation has been part of the gaming industry for well over 30 years at this point. Spanning five generations of consoles, the gaming giant has also worked with some of the industry’s best talents in the industry.

These include the likes of Square Enix, FromSoftware, and more. In fact, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently revealed that FromSoftware may have never joined the industry without PlayStation’s transition to gaming.

Why it matters: FromSoftware is known for several GOTY-winning titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring. The studio is arguably one of modern gaming’s best teams.

Speaking on the My Perfect Console podcast, Shuhei Yoshida recently noted that Sony’s decision to support CD-ROMs in the gaming industry played a vital role in FromSoftware joining the industry.

He highlighted that FromSoftware was originally a business software company, which showed interest in Sony’s CD-ROM system, the PlayStation. This eventually gave FromSoftware the idea that it could also become a game publisher.

A few companies saw the opportunity in CD-ROMs. One of these companies was FromSoftware. When they saw PlayStation was a CD-ROM system, they thought ‘we can become a video game publisher.’

For context, Sony was originally asked to manufacture a CD-ROM for Nintendo’s SNES. Nintendo backing out of the deal eventually led to Sony releasing the first PlayStation, and it seems this domino effect led to FromSoftware becoming the gaming giant we know today.

The studio is best known for its work on Dark Souls and Elden Ring today. PlayStation itself has also collaborated with the studio on multiple occasions, publishing both Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls.

In fact, demand for a return to Bloodborne is at an all-time high today. Rumors have pointed to something related to this IP being in the works for a while, but fans have been left waiting on official word from PlayStation for many years.
