Former GTA Producer Thinks There Shouldn’t Be Filler Content In Video Games

Says 60-70% Gamers Don't Play The Whole Game!

Story Highlight
  • The former producer of GTA 3, 4, 5, RDR, and LA Noire believes that there should be less content in video games.
  • He thinks that 20 hours to beat a game is a good time, as his upcoming title, MindsEye, features a similar playtime.
  • In a recent interview, Leslie Benzies stated that 60 to 70% of gamers don’t complete the game.

Side content in a video game is essential as it allows you to experience more of a particular game’s goodness, or you might get some more lore on a character you like. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the best examples of such games, as it offers a lot of side content that helps you better understand the characters.

However, the renowned producer of GTA games thinks a game shouldn’t feature filler content, and this statement is a little more controversial than the person may have initially thought.

Why it matters: Side content in a game is necessary, as if the game is so good like RDR2, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you can’t be just satisfied with the main story.

Cyberpunk 2077 Side Content Is Top-Notch.

Speaking in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Leslie Benzies said that his studio’s upcoming game, MindsEye, will take around 20 hours to complete, and that is because he doesn’t think filler content should be in video games.

I don’t think you can have filler content in games. I think people want the meat and they want the potatoes, with big games, majority of people 60% or 70% of people don’t actually play games to the end.

-Leslie Benzies

To those not in the know, Benzies was the producer behind games like GTA 3, 4, 5, Red Dead Redemption, and LA Noire. Therefore, he is a significant figure in the gaming industry, lending his opinion greater weight.

Benzies also thinks that the majority of players don’t play the games to the end, which is why, in his opinion, the 20ish hours required to complete a game is the perfect time.

This statement might be a bit controversial, as when a game is good and has a massive open world along with side content, fans tend to play it for over a hundred hours easily
