Highest Rated Game of 2024 And GOTY Contender!

Story Highlight
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth received a 92 score on Metacritic at launch.
  • Metacritic has compiled an official list of the highest-rated games of 2024, with this Square Enix title coming out on top.
  • However, the game seems to have sold well below the publisher’s expectations.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second part of the trilogy of Final Fantasy remakes. This particular title has received so much love since its release that it has become a Game of the Year contender this year.

The JRPG scored a whopping 92/100 on Metacritic, while the developers aimed for a 90/100. Several months later, it remains Metacritic’s biggest game for the first half of 2024.

Why it Matters: 2024 has been surprisingly great for gaming, with many high-profile releases already out in the first six months.

The game has 149 reviews from critics, and the average score of those reviews is 92. The user score also sits at 9.0 after 4,000 reviews. So, it is fair to say that most of the fandom enjoyed the revamped take on this classic JRPG.

Elsewhere, Metacritic’s list of the top releases this year highlights titles like Balatoro, Tekken 8, and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth in the top 5. Other popular releases like Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Persona 3 Reload are also on the list.

This list drives home the point that Japanese titles are doing better than ever, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth leading the pack. However, Square Enix seems to be less enthusiastic about the commercial reception.

The publisher has not shared a sales update, hinting at a low attach rate for this JRPG. This is particularly surprising since Final Fantasy is so big in the industry. If the game hadn’t been exclusive to PlayStation, perhaps it would have attracted a bigger audience.

Nonetheless, Square Enix has confirmed that it intends to bring a similar level of quality for the third entry in this trilogy.

Some may also be confused about Shadow of the Erdtree’s exclusion from the list. While it stands as 2024’s highest-rated release, the DLC’s status as an add-on excludes it from this list of full games. Therefore, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth takes the crown for now.

However, 2024 still has a lot to give. With games like Avowed, Silent Hill 2 Remake, Stalker 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and more releasing this year, it will be interesting to see if Square Enix’s biggest launch will hold on to its position.
