Why it matters: This shows that social media controversies usually don’t hurt the sales of major game releases, similar to what happened with Hogwarts Legacy in 2023.

The controversy about Assassin’s Creed Shadows mainly concerns its portrayal of Yasuke, one of the game’s main characters. Yasuke was an African samurai in feudal Japan, and Ubisoft’s version of him has caused confusion, especially among Japanese fans.
Some critics feel the portrayal isn’t historically accurate. It was revealed that Yasuke’s story was all “made up” by Thomas Lockley, who wrote the book “The True Story of Yasuke” in 2019.
The controversy has become that even the Japanese government is getting involved. Ubisoft has recognized the concerns, apologized for any cultural mistakes, and reiterated that the game solely focuses on entertainment.
Anyhow, despite all the hate and confusion, many people are excited about the game’s release in November this year.
