Elden Ring Nightreign Review Roundup – FromSoftware’s Flawless Streak Broken

Nightreign Is FromSoftware's Worst-Rated Game In Over A Decade!

Story Highlight
  • Elden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftware’s worst-rated release in well over a decade.
  • The game has been criticized for lacking the charm of this studio’s usual experience.
  • The team’s experiment with multiplayer has also led to mixed results.

FromSoftware has had a practically flawless record since the release of Demon’s Souls, releasing hit after hit every few years. Even more controversial titles like Dark Souls 2 have been recognized by the critics, with Elden Ring raising the bar further in 2022.

Therefore, it came as no surprise that FromSoftware’s announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign created a lot of excitement. Many were on the edge of their seats to see what was next for the studio, but in a rare turn of events, Elden Ring Nightreign is not a smash hit, at least in terms of critical reception.

Why it matters: Elden Ring Nightreign was always seen as an experimental and risky title for FromSoftware. It seems this risk has led to mixed results.

Over on Metacritic, the game currently stands at an average score of 78/100, and a few of the scores are listed below.

  • VGC 6/10
  • IGN 7/10
  • GameSpot 9/10
  • TechRaptor 8/10

For context, this is much lower than anything the studio has released over the last decade.

Elden Ring itself boasts an average nearly 20 points higher at 96/100, while a somewhat controversial FromSoftware title like Dark Souls 2 currently boasts a critic score of 91/100.

It seems the major point of contention regarding Elden Ring Nightreign concerns the multiplayer elements. The more critical reviews have criticized the lack of exploration, somewhat lazy reliance on nostalgia for bosses, and the overall repetitive nature of the multiplayer experience.

Meanwhile, the title has still earned praise for its core gameplay, which has potential for future expansion in a later release.

Interestingly, FromSoftware’s next major release is yet another multiplayer-focused experience. The Duskbloods is set to launch as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive and is described as a PVPVE-focused title.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the studio evolves its approach to multiplayer moving forward.
