Veilguard's Sales: A Dragon Age to Forget?

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to reach even the top 50 best-selling new games in Europe.
  • BioWare originally expected to sell 10 million copies within 3 months but fell far short.
  • On the other hand, Star Wars: Outlaws was the 45th best-selling game this year, at least better than The Veilguard.

In 2024, the European video game market saw a major drop, with new game sales falling by 29% compared to the previous year. During this slump Dragon Age: The Veilguard, didn’t make it into the top 50 best-selling new games in the region.

On the other hand, Star Wars: Outlaws was the 45th best-selling game of 2024, despite mixed reviews and struggles with overall sales.

Why it matters: According to an insider, BioWare expected The Veilguard to sell 10 million copies within 3 months. However, GamesIndustry’s data shows the game was certainly miles off the expectation.

Dragon Age The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has a very poor user score on Metacritic.

According to a microcast hosted by GamesIndustry.biz, Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched at number seven on the European monthly sales chart. However, its first-week sales were much lower than other role-playing games released in 2024.

Overall, BioWare’s new title is ranked 68th in the European sales chart for 2024, much worse than Star Wars: Outlaws. This poor performance is reflected in user reviews on Metacritic, with the game receiving a score of 3.7 out of 10 on consoles and a lower 2.2 on PC.

Due to low sales and people not giving the game a chance, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is already 30% off on different platforms.

Star Wars: Outlaws ranked second in PC game sales for September 2024. However, it fell short of Ubisoft’s sales expectations, leading to a 13% drop in the company’s stock after the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Veilguard’s director blamed “hate campaign” for the game’s failure.

The drop in new game sales across Europe is due to several factors, including fewer new releases and changing consumer preferences. Christopher Dring, head of the GamesIndustry portal, pointed out that sales of new games in the region have fallen by nearly a third compared to 2023.
