Doom Heading To Game Pass Day One This Year!

Story Highlight
  • John Romero has praised Game Pass and compared it to Netflix.
  • The Doom designer appreciates the fact that this subscription brings more exposure to games and eliminates the barrier of entry.
  • id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages is set to be one of the many titles launching day one on the service this year.

Game Pass continues to be a divisive topic in the gaming industry. While many have found it unneeded in the industry and believe it harms sales, others find its value undeniable and have praised the service.

One veteran developer from id Software falls in the latter camp. As per his latest statement, Game Pass is great for multiple reasons.

Why it matters: Xbox’s entire future hinges on the success of this subscription and its ability to attract millions of users on a consistent basis.

John Romero, the original designer of Doom and co-founder of id Software, was recently asked to share his thoughts on Xbox’s subscription service.

The developer was quick to say that he loves the service since it essentially serves as “Netflix for games.” He also noted that the great thing about the subscription is that it allows gamers to try various titles before committing to a purchase.

It’s great because it’s try before you buy. It’s a really great way to just try stuff.

The developer explained that the barrier to a game, in many cases, is knowing about its existence. Game Pass solves this issue since it highlights all types of releases upfront to its millions of customers.

Elsehwere, he highlighted how the service doesn’t really harm publishers and developers when users choose to uninstall a game since they would have done so at some point anyway.
