- Bandai Namco’s new financial report reveals Dark Souls has hit 40 million sales.
- It is now the second-highest-selling franchise, next to Tekken’s overall 60 million.
- The series was the one to open the Soulsborne genre to a huge mass of players.
Demon’s Souls kicked off the popular Soulsborne genre in 2009. Its spiritual successor, Dark Souls, was the one that opened the genre to the masses and made it such a phenomenon, and that shows from the sales figures.
According to Bandai Namco’s new report, the Dark Souls series has now reached around 40 million sales. This is a massive milestone considering the last game was years ago, but the franchise remains as famous as ever.
Why it matters: Souls games somewhat fell off after the last Dark Souls; however, Elden Ring revived the genre and even helped the former reach even better sales numbers.

In its latest financial report, Bandai Namco revealed the sales figures for its major console franchises. Tekken leads the way with over 60 million sales, while Dark Souls comes in second with 39.71 million copies sold.
The report covers sales from September 2011 to March 2025, so it might’ve already topped 40 million sales by now. Nonetheless, the last mainline Dark Souls game was released in 2016, so it’s been a long time since the previous title.

Fans were delighted by FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, but they still hold a spot for Dark Souls and have been requesting a new game for years, as it was what made the genre popular. It doesn’t seem the studio will return as it concluded with the third game.
