Crimson Desert Could Be The GOTY If GTA 6 Doesn’t Deliver, Claims Former RDR2 Dev

Could Crimson Desert Really Snag The GOTY This Year?

Story Highlight
  • Crimson Desert is shaping up to be a mega hit with the launch almost a month away.
  • A former RDR2 dev says it could potentially be the GOTY, if GTA 6 drops the ball.
  • Hype for GTA 6 is through the roof, but there is also skepticism if it’ll deliver.

Crimson Desert is among the most anticipated releases of 2026, and from whatever we’ve heard or seen of it so far, it’s looking really promising. But, in a year where GTA 6 also launches, can it stand out even more?

A former Red Dead Redemption 2 developer certainly thinks so, and claims that if GTA 6 doesn’t deliver all the hype around it, Crimson Desert will likely be crowned the Game of the Year, which is a huge compliment

Why it matters: Crimson Desert seems like a mix of everything good about legendary RPGs combined into one, which screams a recipe for success, but GTA 6 is supposed to be the biggest gaming event of the decade.

Now, expectations from GTA 6 are through the roof, and based on Rockstar’s history, it will likely be great. But there is always a slight chance with modern releases that they might miss the mark, and it’s the same for the title.

This [Crimson Desert] could be Game of the Year, if GTA 6 drops the ball. If GTA 6 wasn’t here at all this year, this would probably take GOTY, from what it looks like.

In that event, former Senior Animator on Red Dead 2, Mike York, believes that Crimson Desert would be the GOTY for 2026. He praised the game’s attention to detail, environments, and gameplay.

York further says that it feels like a game catered towards Red Dead fans. However, while the world and mechanics look great, it will be seen if the single-player story complements those or not when it releases in March.

Yes, Crimson Desert is shaping up to be a hit, but it’ll have a lot to prove as it launches in a stacked year with releases like GTA 6, Resident Evil Requiem, Marvel’s Wolverine, Fable reboot, and many more.
