- A new report reveals that total console sales fell by 21% in Europe last year, compared to 2023.
- This massive decrease happened because of market saturation and a lack of new popular game releases.
- The overall game sales also only increased by 1% last year compared to 2023 in the region.
The video game industry has evolved a lot in the last two decades, with consoles often being left behind PC gaming when it comes to availability and other advantages across the globe. However, the overall console sales have now started to see noticeable declines across various regions.
A new report has now revealed that console sales dropped by 21% in Europe last year, a figure that has raised a lot of alarm bells across the whole gaming scene.
Game sales also did not hold much better; over 188.1 million PC and console titles were sold in the region last year, amounting to only a 1% increase from 2023.
Why it matters: A lack of meaningful new releases and market stagnation played a big role in the decline of console sales in Europe. Only six new games were in the top 20 for 2024 compared to ten two years ago.
As reported by VGC courtesy of GSD, the official game sales data suggests that console sales in Europe suffered greatly last year. Out of all the consoles, PlayStation had the best numbers but still fell by 20% in Europe, while Xbox Series X|S dropped by 48% instead.
Another new report also shows that PC gaming has become bigger than ever by accounting for 53% of non-mobile revenue, severely outperforming consoles in terms of games sold.
Overall, it is best to take the analysis with a pinch of salt, as the advantages of PC gaming for many users are the main reason console sales have been declining.
