Biggest Ever First-Party Budget For PlayStation!

Story Highlight
  • A new report states that Concord’s budget was much higher than expected.
  • Developer Firewalk reportedly suffered from a culture of toxic positivity that led to the disaster.
  • The team internally referred to the hero shooter as the future of PlayStation.

Concord’s disastrous launch continues to produce interesting stories nearly one month later. After the game was shut down and completely failed to make much of an impact, it was clear that PlayStation suffered heavy losses.

The hero shooter reportedly sold under 30K copies and was said to have cost as much as $200 million. However, this may have been a generous estimate. A new report from an insider states that Concord actually cost a whopping $400 million to produce.

Why it matters: This budget puts the hero shooter above massive AAA releases like God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part 2.

Firewalk’s Work Was Criticized For Poor Character Designs

As shared by Colin Moriarty, Concord was internally said to be ‘the future of PlayStation.’ The former IGN journalist seems to have received fresh new details from a reliable source, sharing more information on the game’s budget.

Like everyone else, Moriarty was shocked at the cost of the hero shooter. He described it as a very expensive project even before PlayStation’s acquisition of Firewalk.

Up to the point that the game went into alpha state, they had already spent $200 million on it.

By the time this project was completed, this budget had doubled. As per the report, not all of the $400 million came from PlayStation, but the gaming giant likely invested a huge chunk of money in it, with the overall spending exceeding $200 million from PlayStation’s end.

Moriarty revealed that Concord was in a poor state until last year, which led to additional spending despite the $200 million budget. The studio reportedly suffered from a culture of toxic positivity and rejected any legitimate feedback.

Perhaps the most interesting part about the situation is that Concord is not just one of PlayStation’s biggest losses. Colin Moriarty estimates that it likely became the gaming giant’s biggest loss ever since it was the most expensive first-party project to date.

In the aftermath of Concord’s failure, developer Firewalk is seemingly gearing up for the worst. The director behind this hero shooter recently stepped down, and multiple layoffs are expected for this recently acquired studio.
