Call of Duty has had one of the most tumultuous years in recent memory, with multiple analysts ringing alarm bells about the franchise’s future. Activision Blizzard has taken notice of the commotion and is making significant changes to the IP moving forward.

The COD staff has now announced that Black Ops and Modern Warfare games will no longer get incremental releases in the future. The team acknowledges that it needs to deliver an ‘absolutely unique experience’ to satisfy players.

Why it matters: As the competition rises against Call of Duty, the staff acknowledging and aiming to move in the right direction could turn things around for the repetitive FPS franchise.

Call of Duty Blog
The Call of Duty staff has acknowledged that the franchise failed to meet everyone’s expectations.

In a new blog post, staff claim the franchise has failed to satisfy many fans in recent times. Activision is seemingly familiar with the expectations and will ‘overdeliver’ on them as it plans COD’s future.

Incremental releases no longer satisfy players in the oversaturated FPS genre, even for a series as big as COD. It faced significant rivalry from Arc Raiders and Battlefield 6 this year, which has likely influenced this new direction.

We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. The reasons are many, but the main one is to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.

The team is also making Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Multiplayer and Zombies free for the next week, with double XP. This initiative is likely to entice players to give the game a try at least once, as many skipped out on Black Ops 7 because of the series’ declining quality.

We will drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental.

Black Ops 7 was heavily criticized for its use of AI and unrealistic boss battles, which made its user and critic ratings decline massively.
