Story Highlight
  • Time Magazine has named Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as its 2025 GOTY.
  • The publication highlights the game’s themes, music, emotional storyline, and combat as the reason behind this decision.
  • Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei ended up as No.2 and No.3 in the ranking.

As the award season rolls around, everyone in the gaming industry is expecting Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to dominate at every show. The RPG’s winning streak has already begun, as it swept the Golden Joystick Awards, winning the top prize, Ultimate Game of the Year.

Many are expecting the same results at The Game Awards next week, as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the most nominated game in the show’s history. But, before we head to the main event, the Sandfall Interactive title has added another medal to its collection.

Why It Matters: By the end of this award season, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could be the most awarded title in the history of gaming.

Time Magazine highlighted the emotional themes of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in its GOTY description.

In its end-of-the-year list, Time Magazine has named Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as 2025’s Game of the Year. This is the third GOTY award for Sandfall Interactive’s RPG, following wins at the Thailand Game Awards and Golden Joystick.

Time Magazine points out the emotional themes and the fantasy setting as some of the strongest aspects of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, what truly takes the RPG to the next level is its beautiful score, which is among the best in video game history, according to the publication.

Furthermore, the game’s take on morality and its brilliant visual storytelling are also highlighted in the magazine’s description, with Time saying they make Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 more than just an RPG.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Ultimate Game of the Year
Following wins at the Golden Joystick Awards, this is Expedition 33’s third GOTY.

Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding 2 ended up at the No.2 spot on the list, with Ghost of Yotei claiming the Bronze medal. Split Fiction, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Silent Hill F also made the cut in Time Magazine’s list, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Dispatch missed out.

Considering how Dragon Age: Veilguard was the publication’s GOTY in 2024, this is a step in the right direction and could be an indicator of Expedition 33’s incoming victory at The Game Awards, which Devs are already anticipating.
