The Game Began As A Passion Project At First!

Story Highlight
  • The Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director has revealed he left Ubisoft because he was bored at work.
  • He wanted to make an RPG inspired by his childhood favorite series, Final Fantasy.
  • Most of the developers on the game were fresh and hired through platforms like Reddit.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently launched to a massive reception from the fans despite its release clashing with Bethesda’s heavy-hitting shadowdrop, Oblivion Remastered. It is also no secret that the game’s developers have previously worked at Ubisoft.

However, the game director revealed that he grew bored at Ubisoft and wanted to do something new, which led him to come up with an idea for an RPG inspired by one of his childhood favorite franchises.

Why it matters: Fans often complain that Ubisoft games are stuck in a cycle, but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is highly creative and opens the turn-based genre to a whole new audience, marking great success.

Clair Obscur was mostly developed by fresh faces.

Talking to the BBC, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director and former Ubisoft developer Guillaume Broche revealed that the game was initially just a passion project. Despite the belief that most developers are Ubisoft veterans, most of the team consists of newcomers.

Broche wanted to create a game inspired by the Final Fantasy franchise, so he left Ubisoft in 2020. Interestingly, most of the team was hired through Reddit and other forums for this passion project.

At the start, there was no funding; however, later Kepler Interactive funded the project, and the team grew to 30 people, forming Sandfall Entertainment. He says none of this sounded right, but it ended up working out so well.

The title began as a passion project, but later got funded by Kepler Interactive.

The title has since sold over 1 million copies and has consistently recorded higher concurrent players, despite being over a week since launch. The game is also really polished and doesn’t seem like the work of fresh faces at all.
