Bend Studio Was Leading Uncharted Revival Before Live Service Project

Uncharted Was So Close To A Comeback!

Story Highlight
  • Bend Studio has cancelled three unannounced games after it released Days Gone.
  • One of these projects involved working with Naughty Dog and was likely an Uncharted revival.
  • The game utilized Naughty Dog’s proprietary engine and included player cover as seen throughout the series.

Bend Studio recently cancelled its Unreal Engine 5-based live-service project, but this is not the first big game the team has cancelled. In fact, a total of three games have been cancelled by the studio since it launched Days Gone in 2019.

Among these projects, one marked a joint effort between Naughty Dog and Bend Studio, and there is reason to believe that both teams were attempting to revive Uncharted.

Why it matters: Fans have been calling for an Uncharted revival for a while now, citing The Last of Us fatigue following the IP’s constant re-releases.

Bend Studio Worked On Uncharted Revival
Bend Studio’s Cancelled Projects Point To Work On Uncharted Revival.

Software engineer Jeremy Koepke’s LinkedIn profile reveals a few interesting details about Bend Studio’s work over the last seven years.

According to his profile, the team worked on Days Gone 2 following the first game’s release. This project was later cancelled, and the team shifted its focus to working alongside Naughty Dog on an unannounced project.

Jeremy Koepke mentions that this project was scrapped, too, but it involved working on Naughty Dog’s proprietary engine. For context, this engine does not see much use, if any at all, outside of the studio’s own games.

Given Bend Studio’s past work on Uncharted Golden Abyss and rumors suggesting the team’s ongoing interest in the franchise as early as 2020, it is reasonable to believe that this unannounced project was a revival of the fan-favorite IP.

The LinkedIn profile also mentions player cover for this project, which may be a reference to the third-person cover mechanics featured throughout Uncharted.

Prison Fight In Uncharted 4
Uncharted 4 Still Holds Up To This Day.

While Bend Studios has since moved on, the project does suggest that PlayStation and Naughty Dog are interested in bringing Uncharted back. Perhaps PlayStation will attempt to revive the IP once again in the near future.

Would you have played another Uncharted game? Do you think PlayStation should bring the series back? Let’s discuss in the comments and on the Tech4Gamers forum.
