2023 was a huge year for the gaming industry, but Baldur’s Gate 3 came out on top, winning the GOTY at nearly every significant event.
Before its release, developers were concerned that Larian Studios’ work would become the new bar for RPGs. However, Larian Studios states that these concerns are not valid, and games like GTA 6 will likely dwarf its work.
Why it matters: The game has sold over 15 million units just after a few months of its release, becoming one of the most successful releases over the last few years.
During a recent interview with Gamepressure, Swen Vincke addressed a statement from last year.
In 2023, one developer claimed that fans should not expect the same level of content and quality as Baldur’s Gate 3 from every RPG moving forward. He clarified that Baldur’s Gate 3 was more of an anomaly.
Swen Vincke addressed this comment and stated that he doesn’t think Larian Studios’ work struck fear in the hearts of AAA developers. He also believed that many upcoming games could surpass everything Larian Studios achieved.
In particular, the developer pointed to games like The Witcher 4 and GTA 6, which are both said to be highly ambitious in their own ways.

Swen believes that Baldur’s Gate 3’s success shouldn’t make anyone afraid but motivate them to create a better game.
We also agree with the Larian Studios boss. While Baldur’s Gate 3 was a fantastic release, many excellent titles with a much bigger budget are already in development and coming as soon as next year, so there is little to worry about.
Larian Studios is working on its own ultimate RPG project, which won’t be released before the arrival of PS6. Therefore, the team may itself eclipse everything Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved in a few years.
