One of the Best-Selling RPGs Ever!

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 has officially sold over 20 million copies across all platforms.
  • It maintains a surprisingly high number of active players long after its initial release.
  • Expectations are high for Larian’s upcoming title, Divinity.

Baldur’s Gate 3, the GOTY-winning RPG from Larian Studios, has now sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, according to the studio’s CEO Swen Vincke. This is a huge achievement for the game, which launched in August 2023 and quickly became one of the most talked-about RPGs of the decade.

The sales figure was recently shared in an interview with Bloomberg, in which Vincke confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 has surpassed 20 million units across all platforms. This includes PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S sales.

Why it matters: That success also put new pressure on Larian’s upcoming Divinity. Baldur’s Gate 3 did more than sell well. It became one of the highest-rated games ever made.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s journey has been remarkable. It started with an early access phase in 2020 that helped build a loyal fan base. Even then, the game sold millions of copies before its full release. After the official launch in August 2023, it quickly rose to the Steam charts and remained near the top all year.

Industry analysts had hinted at these substantial sales numbers long before the official announcement. Various data sources reported that Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold millions of units across PC and consoles.

While Larian hadn’t shared exact totals for a long time, players and analysts knew the game was one of the most popular RPGs of the decade.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was not just a sales hit. It also held players’ attention long after launch. Even a year later, it was still near the top of Steam’s most-played and best-selling charts.

At the time of writing, Baldur’s Gate 3 has 60K concurrent players on Steam. That kind of staying power is uncommon for large RPGs and has helped keep the game in constant focus.

Not only that, the RPG won Game of the Year awards from a wide range of media outlets and critics. That level of success gives Larian more freedom and financial stability, but it also raises expectations for their next game, Divinity.

Reaching 20 million sales shows that story-driven RPGs still matter in gaming. Even as new games and trends appear, players continue to return to the Forgotten Realms for its choices, battles, and detailed lore.
