Obsidian May Turn Avowed Into A Franchise!

Story Highlight
  • Avowed might get expansions or sequels later down the road, as implied by the RPG’s creative director in an interview.
  • Carrie Patel wants to do more with the world they’ve built in Avowed, but the dev hasn’t elaborated on its exact plans.
  • The RPG went through multiple reboots in development, and comparisons with the 2006 Oblivion reveal major downgrades.

Microsoft’s new AAA first-party entry, Avowed, is the single-player latest RPG to grace the gaming scene. Many critics have found Obsidian’s entry fun enough to experience without thinking too hard. However, the studio might already have grand plans for the game.

Avowed’s creative director, Carrie Patel, has teased in a new interview that the title might see DLCs or even sequels in the future.

Why it matters: Avowed has launched only recently, but Obsidian is possibly planning to expand the RPG into a proper franchise in the future. For now, it’s too early to tell whether Avowed will get a sequel in the future.

Avowed

While speaking to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Avowed’s creative director mentions that the idea of doing something new with the RPG is already pretty appealing. Carrie wants to do more with the world and the content that Obsidian has built over the years in Avowed.

I’d love to see us do more with it.

On the flip side, Carrie also elaborates that Avowed took six years to develop and went through two reboots. The project even began as a multiplayer take on Skyrim, which makes the current single-player launch completely unimaginable when compared.

Avowed vs Oblivion Attention to Detail
A comparison between Avowed and Oblivion revealed notable downgrades in Obsidian’s new RPG.

Avowed has performed notably well despite mixed user reviews on Metacritic and the mostly positive rating on Steam. However, the entry has been criticized for bland NPCs and a static world that doesn’t react to the player.

Do you think Avowed will eventually get DLCs or even become a franchise with sequels in the future, or are these remarks just PR talk? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
