Don't Sleep On This Hidden Gem!

Story Highlights
  • Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is an underrated game that never really got the recognition it deserved.
  • The addition of two assassins was a unique idea at the time, offering different playstyles.
  • Despite being overlooked, Syndicate is still a great game. If you’re into classic Assassin’s Creed adventures, it’s a game worth exploring again.

In the universe of Assassin’s Creed, each fan has their own favorite, shaped by personal gameplay preferences. While titles like the Ezio trilogy and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag are extremely popular, one often overlooked gem is Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

Upon its release, this entry faced challenges that led to its initial dismissal by even the most die-hard fans of the franchise. However, the game certainly deserves a chance, especially from a different perspective.

Why it matters: This game followed the surprisingly disappointing launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Therefore, it may have received unfair criticism at the time due to the overall franchise fatigue.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Victorian London Was Mesmerizing

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, often overlooked compared to earlier games and the infamous Unity, can surprise players in a good way. Choosing to give this installment a chance, despite its less-than-stellar reputation, turns out to be a satisfying decision.

Ubisoft’s careful design brought Victorian London to life in 2015, with its atmospheric streets and the secretive world of clandestine activities. The game stands out with its setting – London in 1868, amidst the Industrial Revolution.

The huge map lets players explore key areas, using a grappling hook to climb tall structures and venture into open-ended factories and iconic train stations. The weather effects and lighting contribute to the game’s uniquely somber yet charming atmosphere.

While the narrative follows a typical Assassin’s Creed premise, it comes to life through strong lead performances, clever writing, and lovable characters. Historical appearances from figures like Karl Marx, Alexander Graham Bell, and Charles Dickens bring authenticity and charm to Syndicate’s storyline.

Multiple Protagonists

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate introduces Evie and Jacob Frye, twin assassins, out to free London from Templar ruler Crawford Starrick. The game’s standout feature is the dual protagonists – Evie excels in stealth, while Jacob relies on his fists.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate Underrated Gem

Despite sharing many abilities, the subtle differences and unique upgrades for each character make the gameplay unique. Unlike its RPG trilogy counterparts, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate brings a fresh approach to combat and stealth.

The game enables smooth navigation through narrow alleys and thrilling rooftop chases. The satisfaction of executing stealth attacks and moving beyond simple health deductions adds a strategic layer often absent in open-world adventures.

Despite its open world and enjoyable gameplay, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate didn’t get the recognition it deserved. The familiar formula, even with efforts to tweak combat and stealth, might be why.

The market saturation with three mainline Assassin’s Creed games in two years and the rocky launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity contributed to this entry being overlooked. Either way, we urge you to cast aside preconceived notions and explore the fascinating world of Victorian London in this 2015 release.
