- Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ associate game director says upcoming games will focus on parkour.
- He argues that Shadows and other RPG AC games missed the mark with parkour due to less verticality.
- The director wants parkour to be treated as a core feature for future AC titles like the classics were known for.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows saw a lot of controversy even before its launch, but even those who appreciated the game brought up criticisms about its parkour feeling stiff and lacking. While it has since been improved via updates, it’s clear that damage has already been done.
Now, Ubisoft Quebec and AC Shadows’ associate game director admit that the game missed the mark with parkour. He highlights that Ubisoft has failed to prioritize parkour as a mechanic since the RPG AC games began.
Why it matters: Ubisoft wants parkour to be prioritized for the next Assassin’s Creed titles after realizing that players were upset with the new direction of the movement mechanics in recent releases.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Simon Lemay-Comtois claims he has learned this lesson and wants to treat parkour as its own pillar in upcoming AC titles.
It no longer remained as a focus because open-world Assassin’s Creed games lacked the verticality and a general need for fluid parkour. Regardless, stiffer movement has not resonated with fans.
Pay more attention to parkour in future games as its own pillar.

While Shadows and Mirage have already seen massive improvements in parkour since their respective launches, the importance of the feature is also being internally pushed to AC developers for future projects.
We’re trying to rectify that in post launch with Shadows and push that narrative internally to say, parkour matters. Let’s really push parkour forward.
Therefore, we can expect the upcoming games—like Jade, Hexe, and the rumored Black Flag remake—to feature parkour that feels natural and nostalgic.

On a side note, AC Shadows’ first DLC also saw disappointing results, making Ubisoft cancel plans for the second one entirely. The game has also been criticized for its unexpected collaboration with Attack on Titan.
