AMD Admits The Importance of AI!

AMD has now also joined other chip manufacturers in using artificial intelligence in designing. The CEO of AMD, Lisa Su, also believes that AI-enabled tools are necessary for better chip design in order to keep up with the complexity of modern processors.

During the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Lisa Su emphasized the importance of AI and how its use has become important in various areas of chip design.  This implementation should result in a better hardware design for future generations of processors.

AMD Ryzen 5 7500FFurthermore, Nvidia executives also think the usage of AI-enabled tools is necessary for chip development. Currently, AMD utilizes AI-enabled tools during three steps of semiconductor design.

This includes designing, testing, and verification. Additionally, the usage of AI during the place and route stage is essential to design chips that offer better performance without sacrificing efficiency.

AMD’s Chief Technology Officer said that AI’s ability to continuously learn from its mistakes and come up with a better and more effective design has improved the process of achieving an optimized layout.

The company also has plans to further the use of AI-enabled tools during chip design. However, for now, AI is limited to certain aspects.

The use of AI-enabled tools has been steadily increasing and is proving to be playing an essential role during chip design. Currently, three makers are leading electronic design automation (EDA) tools. This includes Synopsys, Cadence, and Ansys.

With its new program Synopsys.ai, Synopsys is ahead of the competition. It offers the first EDA solution that will utilize AI throughout the stages of chip development. As Moore’s Law is nearing an end with IBM 2 nanometer manufacturing process, it would be necessary to leverage AI-enabled tools like Synopsys.ai.
