What To Consider When Buying A GPU

If you’re confused by the options available at the Amazon Prime Day Sale, here’s what to consider:

  • Resolution and Refresh Rate Requirements: Generally, an entry-level card like the RTX 5060 is sufficient for gaming at 1080P resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate. If you want to push to 1440P, you should at least be looking at an RX 9060 XT, and so on.
  • VRAMMost AAA titles nowadays require at least 8 GB of VRAM, with 12 GB as the intermediate and 16 GB as the recommended capacity for maxed-out settings.
  • Software: Manufacturer-specific software like Nvidia’s Shadowplay, and tools like upscalers (DLSS vs FSR) and latency-optimizers (Reflex vs Anti-Lag) are often limited to the manufacturer, especially on Nvidia’s side.
  • TDPPick your GPU according to your power supply’s wattage and ensure your system’s total power draw can be supported by it. Nvidia’s GPUs tend to be more power-efficient than AMD GPUs.
