Battlefield 1 was released in October 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The community received the game well, and critics praised its improved sound design, multiplayer modes, and good visuals over its predecessor.

The players moved on to the new Battlefield games as the next mainline entry in the franchise; Battlefield 5 was released in 2018, and Battlefield 2042 in November 2021. Still, after 6 years of its release, Battlefield 1 has seen a massive resurgence in its player count on Steam.

It also reached 53,714 concurrent players on Steam a few days ago from on average 4000 players, and at the time of writing this article, 27,121 are playing the game.

It is mainly due to the lack of updates and content in the franchise’s latest mainline entry, Battlefield 2042. And top of that, Battlefield 1 was on an 88% discount a few days ago when it hit its all-time high record.

Battlefield 2042 had a disastrous launch, and fans liked the game’s lack of innovation. Battlefield 2042 was criticized for its bad mechanics, technical issues, and changed in-game skill systems. It has been a year since its launch, and the developer DICE is still lacking in the post-launch updates for the game, and recently DICE has hinted towards sticking to one map per season format, which has further infuriated the fans.

While Battlefield 1 is seeing a resurgence in its player count, Battlefield 2042 is going downhill; at the time of writing this article, only 4,691 are playing Battlefield 2042 which is almost 6 times less than the current players playing Battlefield 1.

It is interesting to see a 6-year-old game reclaiming its throne on the players’ charts despite having two new games released after it. Undoubtedly, Battlefield 1 was a massive success for the developer DICE as it managed to sell over 15 million copies by 2018 and again saw success after 6 years of its release.
