The Nintendo Switch is the game-changing first handheld console that competes with traditional consoles. The sales speak for themselves and tell a success story, particularly in Japan, where it dominates the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S

According to Game Data Library on Twitter, the Nintendo Switch has officially outsold the 3DS in the region, with a total of 24,765,068 copies sold since its launch on March 3rd, 2017. Since its release on February 26th, 2011, the 3DS has sold aligned sales of both systems launches24,759,642 units.

Nintendo Switch was released in 2017 and has already climbed to the top three spot in Japan’s Market, competing against the best of the best (GameBoy and Nintendo DS) that have been on the market for decades. In other words, the fact that Nintendo Switch has sold over 24 million units in Japan alone in the previous four and a half years is a significant accomplishment and success story.

Furthermore, GameDataLibrary gives more information via a table that compares the Nintendo Switch to other gaming hardware available in Japan and its documented sales units. Nintendo is currently in the top four positions in most units sold in the Japanese market. It truly demonstrates Nintendo’s market share and dominance in the targeted region.

Aside from that, we know that the Nintendo team isn’t focused on celebrating their global success but rather on figuring out new ways to compete in the market for their next-Gen console, the Nintendo Switch 2. Previously a job listing that referred to Nvidia’s developer tools, confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 console would feature Nvidia SoC to achieve better and more consistent frame rates coupled with technologies like DLSS.

Nonetheless, at this rate, the Nintendo Switch is likely to surpass the Nintendo DS within a few years. It’s still incredible that the Nintendo Switch sells more in Japan than the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Nintendo Switch has the potential to become the best-selling gaming hardware? Do you think Nintendo Switch 2 will be a success as well?
