Skull and Bones is Ubisoft’s return to the world of pirates after the critically acclaimed Assassin’s Creed 4. The game was advertised as a multiplayer experience inspired by the naval combat featured in the Assassin’s Creed games. While the game was announced back in 2017, news has been scarce for the game. Ubisoft was completely silent on the game for a while, but recent news points at development for the game being back on track.
Industry insider Tom Henderson recently talked about a playtest for the game and pointed out that the game has since seen a shift in direction compared to the original vision of the 2017 reveal.
Skull and Bones Technical Playtest invites have just been sent out, which begin at the end of week.

And now, the first gameplay from the Skull and Bones alpha test has been leaked. The video below shows the first few minutes of the game in technical test build.
Update: Original Footage was taken down, here is new gameplay of Skull and Bones.
The above video starts with the opening cutscene of the game’s alpha test build. Mechanics like infamy are highlighted, along with the phenomenal ship combat from the earlier trailers. The pirates themselves seem to be an integral part of the experience. Several cosmetic upgrades are shown for the playable characters and mechanics like rebellions within the crew. This appears to be a different direction for the game than the initial focus being limited to naval combat. Looting and plundering will also be a big part of the game, going by the leaked gameplay.
While the gameplay does not show much, it confirms that the title has been revamped and is headed in a new direction. The original Skull and Bones reveal had fans excited for a multiplayer experience similar to Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. The naval combat in Ubisoft’s games was universally praised, and it was a pleasant surprise to see a multiplayer game focused on it. However, the game has been subject to development troubles. Skull and Bones does not have a release date yet, but the alpha test shows a lot of potential for the future of Skull and Bones. Ubisoft finally has a vision for the game, and development is now headed in the right direction.
