- Obsidian Entertainment is replacing PSSR with TSR for The Outer Worlds 2 on PS5 Pro.
- Sony’s proprietary tech was causing blurry visuals and bad performance with the game.
- This is yet another case of PSSR making things worse, not better, in games.
Sony released the PS5 Pro as the most powerful console available on the market. Hardware-wise, it is undoubtedly just that; however, optimization and software issues are what’re keeping it from its full potential.
The Outer Worlds 2 is the latest case of a game with a better experience on the base console compared to the Pro. To tackle the issue, the studio has replaced PS5 Pro’s proprietary PSSR upscaling tech with TSR.
Why it matters: PSSR has been a known culprit of bad performance and visuals ever since the pro console came out; in fact, the tech causes more problems than it solves, so Sony has a lot of work to do with that.

Recent performance analysis showed The Outer Worlds 2 had a really bad case of PSSR upscaling as well. The graphics were extremely blurry, and the game looked much better on the base PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Obsidian Entertainment has released new patch notes revealing they’ve replaced PSSR with TSR to address blurry visuals. Now, both technologies use upscaling to add reconstructed images, but both work in different ways.

PSSR uses machine learning to reconstruct images at a higher resolution, and TSR is a little less advanced, as it does the same using older frames as a reference. But because PSSR isn’t that mature, it has a lot of issues.
This is a serious issue that is making things look bad for the pro console. It is an almost $800 console, and if fans aren’t getting their money’s worth, they are better off with base consoles like the PS5 and Series X.
