- Sony could be looking to license out its in-house Decima Engine to other studios as well.
- The engine is one of the finest tech, featuring great visual fidelity and optimizations.
- Recent titles to use it include Death Stranding 2 and Horizon: Forbidden West.
Decima Engine was first created by Guerrilla Games in 2013 for Killzone: Shadow Fall. However, it needed lots of improvements at that time. Kojima and Guerrilla then joined forces to enhance the engine into what it is currently.
While Decima Engine doesn’t have some of the advanced features of Unreal Engine 5, it has evolved into one of the finest in-house tech we’ve ever seen. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Sony is looking to outsource it to other studios.
Why it matters: Based on Death Stranding 2, Decima proved that ray tracing and other similar tech aren’t worth the performance compromise if you can make the visual fidelity similar using different techniques, showing its superiority.
According to a Redditor who claims to have talked to a developer during a recent Kojima event in London, Sony is considering licensing out Decima Engine to other studios. This could be a great call as it would be a win-win situation.
However, there is no confirmation of whether it will be limited to first-party studios or also include third-party developers. Nonetheless, recent job postings have proved that other in-house studios like Bend were developing their titles using Decima.
If Sony is indeed planning to outsource the engine, it will be beneficial for other developers, too. Death Stranding 2 was one of the most visually appealing games of all time, despite no ray tracing or any other similar tech.
While this is most likely true, take this with a grain of salt. The developer also stated that The Last of Us Online was brilliant before Bungie interrupted its development. Anyhow, let’s wait and see what plans Sony has for the future.
