Green Goblin Was Set To Be The 2nd Playable Character!

Story Highlight
  • Concept Artist Ian Hosfeld recently shared details for the cancelled Ultimate Spider-Man 2.
  • The cancelled sequel featured Wolverine and Daredevil, with the Green Goblin as a playable character, and was set in an expanded New York.
  • Despite exciting gameplay features like mini-combat helicopters and new weather effects, the game was scrapped due to insufficient sales and other projects at Activision.

The friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man has seen many iterations across the gaming world. While Insomniac’s version of the webhead is the most famous, fans can remember the 2005 iteration, which was basically a playable comic book.

Ultimate Spider-Man remains one of the best adaptations of the wall-crawler and has gathered a cult following over the years. At one point, the game also had a sequel in development, and thanks to the concept artist, details on the title have now emerged.

Why it matters: Ultimate Spider-Man looks and sounds so good. It’s a shame that fans were robbed of another peak portrayal of the superhero.

Ian Hosfeld recently shared details on the cancelled sequel, and it appears that the entire storyboard for the game was laid out.

The title would’ve featured Wolverine’s return, with Doctor Doom playing a minor role in the narrative. Additionally, Daredevil and The Hand would’ve been present in the story.

According to the details, Shadowcast from the X-Men had a supporting role, and players would also be able to control the Green Goblin as the second playable protagonist. The expanded gameplay also featured mini-combat helicopters and winter weather effects.

The open world of New York City was also expanded with the addition of Brooklyn and Coney Island. The sequel’s story was loosely based on the Ultimate Spider-Man: Death of a Goblin comic.

The comic’s story involved Spider-Man and Green Goblin’s fight after the supervillain’s presumed death. Peter Parker’s identity would have been exposed to his enemies, who would have united to defeat the webhead.

Unfortunately, the sequel could never be released because Activision didn’t find the first game’s sales sufficient. At the time, Treyarch was also working on Call of Duty 3 and Spider-Man 3, which was the final nail in the coffin for the sequel.
