- Sony has published a new patent that discusses creating custom flashback sequences or highlight reels of missed gameplay events.
- If a player stops paying attention or does not understand what to focus on in the game, the system can help them catch up.
- Sony might use the camera to spy on players to ensure their attention is on the game, creating custom recaps if they lose focus.
Nowadays, developers have been working to make gaming as convenient as possible for players, with most games almost hand-holding through the entire process. Now, a new patent wants to ensure players with low attention spans can keep up with gameplay.
We’ve found a new patent by Sony that wants to create custom recaps of missed gameplay events if a player stops paying attention or does not know where to focus. These custom recaps can be flashback sequences, highlight reels, etc.
Sony wants to ensure that gamers can quickly understand and catch up on the content they have missed before moving on to the rest of the game.
a service […] can provide customized summaries when a trigger is detected that indicates that the player may have missed one or more events or actions during gameplay. […] The summary may […] include generating a custom flashback sequence.
Why it matters: The new Sony patent wants to ensure that disabled or confused gamers can also keep up with in-game events by being able to view custom recaps at any given time during gameplay.
The patent dubbed ‘GENERATING CUSTOMIZED SUMMARIES OF VIRTUAL ACTIONS AND EVENTS’ discusses using a camera to keep notice of the player’s gaze to ensure that they stay focused on the game. When the player loses attention and misses out on important events, the system can kick in to create a custom recap.
Sony claims cinematic games can be challenging for players with attention-deficit disorders, disabilities, or limited gaming experience, making it harder for them to enjoy the experience. So, custom recaps can solve these dilemmas.
In many interactive media titles, there may be a number of actions and events that happen at the same time or over a period of time during which the player was not paying attention to an important story arch or gameplay moment.
Sony also discusses letting players share these custom recaps with each other to assist in understanding a game better. However, it remains to be seen how or if this patent will even be implemented.
Sony has also secured various unique ideas over the years, including a patent for players to assist others in real-time by combining inputs during gameplay and a new controller with swappable buttons to let players customize layouts.
