- Black Myth: Wukong, a tech marvel, was being a burden on current-gen consoles.
- So, fans were expecting it to run better on the latest mid-gen refresh.
- The game’s patch for PS5 Pro was just recently released, and its performance mode still runs almost the same as the base console, but the quality mode offers better image quality thanks to PSSR.
Black Myth: Wukong, while the biggest release this year, had some technical issues, especially on the consoles. The game didn’t really offer ideal performance, so fans were hoping PS5 Pro would be able to run it better.
Before the patch was released, the console’s raw power wasn’t enough to deliver solid results. However, the patch has now been released, and it still doesn’t look that promising. The console fails to maintain 60FPS in performance mode at 1080P resolution using frame-gen and FSR 3.
Why it matters: While the PSSR implementation over FSR has proven to be better in the game it seems like the pro variant still is unable to deliver the solid 60FPS experience.
Digital Foundry has done an in-depth analysis of Black Myth: Wukong on PS5 Pro and the base console for comparison. The analysis revealed a lot of positive things about PSSR, but the tech expert doesn’t seem to be satisfied with the 120 HZ and performance modes.
The quality mode runs at 30 FPS with the image quality being a lot better than the base console. The native resolution is around 1296P which is upscaled to 4K. The resolution looks crisp enough and sharp, giving a clearer image quality and more stable lightning.
In the 120 HZ mode, the game runs at 40 FPS, which is a little disappointing. However, the relay concern lies in performance mode. The PS5 Pro can’t maintain 60FPS and still uses frame-gen and FSR 3 at 1080P resolution. The frames drop to as low as 46 FPS, as per the analysis by Digital Foundry.
The PS5 Pro performance mode doesn’t have many improvements over the base console, so that’s a little disappointing. However, the PSSR implementation and the differences in other areas are impressive.
PSSR is still new and has a lot of potential. Many developers have claimed to be on par with Nvidia’s DLSS, so Sony can improve it way more. The AI upscaler has some problems for now, as it seems to be in beta and just a test for the PlayStation 6.
What do you think about the PS5 Pro performance mode still not running Black Myth: Wukong, ideally? Do you think the console’s pros outweigh its cons? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below or join the discussion at the official Tech4Gamers forums.
