Finally Acknowledging The Underrated PS Vita!

Story Highlight
  • Sony has recently praised the PS Vita, dubbing it a major leap for handheld gameplay.
  • The gaming giant says that this system delivered console-like experiences in a smaller form factor.
  •  Sony has yet to share official sales figures for this system.

PlayStation’s first foray into the handheld market was an instant success, leading to nearly 100 million sales for the PSP. The gaming giant then followed up with the PS Vita, hoping to deliver console-level gaming in a handheld form factor.

Despite its many strengths, this successor failed to live up to the PSP and was eventually ignored in favor of the much more successful PS4. While the console had a mixed history, PlayStation has finally acknowledged its positives over a decade later.

Why it matters: The PS Vita is considered underrated among Sony’s hardware releases. As such, fans will be happy to see Sony finally acknowledging its upsides.

Sony Had High Hopes For Its Second Portable System

PlayStation recently launched a brand new 30th anniversary page, reflecting on its history in the industry.

Over in the PS Vita section, PlayStation dubbed this 2011 handheld an evolutionary leap forward. This statement is so interesting because the company has seldom acknowledged this portable console.

It was quick to phase out support for PS Vita a few years after its release, and official sales figures for the hardware were never shared. Unfortunately, no update has been provided on the sales figures to this day.

PlayStation Vita marked another evolutionary leap forward in portable gaming.

The PS Portal Serves As A Spiritual Successor To Sony’s Handhelds

As per Sony, the PS Vita built an interconnected ecosystem with PlayStation consoles, delivering console experiences on a smaller scale.

The gaming giant also listed features like the rear touchpad, OLED screen, and touch screen as the defining strengths of its last handheld. Moreover, it noted games like Gravity Rush and Uncharted Golden Abyss as quintessential parts of the library.

Fast forward to 2024, and Sony has launched the PS Portal as its latest handheld. Though this device is limited to streaming, the gaming giant is said to be working on an all-new portable console for the future.

Therefore, the PS Vita’s legacy will live on with the next hardware designed for on-the-go experiences. What are your thoughts on Sony’s nostalgic look at the PS Vita? Share your thoughts in the comments, and join the community on the Tech4Gamers Forums for additional discussions.
