- Avowed is set to feature different pronouns.
- The game will allow players to pick options like He/Him, She/Her, and They/Them.
- Some fans have already responded negatively to this inclusion.
Avowed, Obsidian’s first major RPG since 2019’s The Outer Worlds, is set to arrive on Xbox consoles and Game Pass in 2025. The RPG has received encouraging previews ahead of release, with many fans anticipating what could be one of the biggest games of the first quarter of next year.
The recent previews shed light on various parts of the game, but they also confirm one particular detail that may become controversial. According to various videos, Avowed will feature pronouns for the created characters.
Why it matters: Bethesda’s Starfield included similar pronoun options in the character creation menu. This led to outrage from certain fans who did not like the option.
The latest footage of Avowed shows pronouns at the top right of the character menu. As seen above, the player has picked ‘He/Him’ pronouns, but options even include ‘They/Them’ as part of the appeal to a modern audience.
This choice could be controversial to some since there has been much debate about games catering to a wider audience. Moreover, the RPG is based on a fantasy setting, so some players might not necessarily agree with the choice to include these options.
In fact, a few fans are already calling out Obsidian for this choice. Recently, a title like Dragon Age: The Veilguard has also received criticism for going a bit too far in its efforts to pursue greater diversity and inclusivity.
Elsewhere, Avowed has been compared to Skyrim, setting high expectations for the RPG. The game seems to be on the right track, so it will be interesting to see the initial reception after its release.
