But CEO Remains Interested In Indie Games!

Story Highlight
  • The CEO of Pocketpair has revealed that its next game could go beyond AAA scope thanks to profits from Palworld.
  • However, the studio isn’t structured in a way that it can handle a project of such scale.
  • Due to that, the CEO prefers stick with indie releases over a big-scale game.

Palworld was the biggest and most surprising release this year. The developer behind this game, Pocketpair, has earned a lot of respect from the fandom following its massive success.

When the game was released, it started breaking records like they were nothing. It earned billions in profit, while the budget was a mere $6.7 million. Due to this hefty profit, Pocketpair’s CEO believes the studio’s next game could go beyond the scope of AAA releases.

Why it matters: Palworld has given Pocketpair all the freedom it could have wanted. The studio can now make any type of game.

Palworld Made Billions Despite Its Small Scale

In an interview with GameSpark, the CEO of Pocketpair, Takuro Mizobe, revealed that Palworld’s revenue is in the tens of billions of Yen. According to the CEO, this money has opened new opportunities.

If we were to develop our next game based on these proceeds, as we have done in the past, the scale would go beyond AAA.

-Takuro Mizobe

Mizobe said that Palworld was developed thanks to the profit from the studio’s previous games, Craftopia and Overdungeon. However, if they were to follow this trend and develop a project with the profit of Palworld, the studio would fail.

He believes the developer can easily go beyond the scale of AAA gaming, but Pocketpair isn’t structured to handle a project this big. Mizobe has made his intent clear, which is that he doesn’t want to create a game of massive scale.

The main problem in this instance seems to be the availability of resources and developers.

Even with a massive budget, this team would need to make fundamental changes to its practices to take on a project that rivals AAA releases. There’s a reason publishers like Ubisoft and EA, known for such titles, are so big.

Takuro Mizobe wants to move forward with a focus on indie games. This seems to be a common theme at the studio since Pocketpair’s community manager previously praised the genre for its creativity.

Perhaps the studio will release something similar to Palworld again. For now, it is completely focused on supporting Palworld with new content.
