Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Hoped To Make A Fallout RPG At One Point

Larian's Take on Fallout Would've Been Incredible!

Story Highlight
  • Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke recently reflected back on the studio’s history.
  • He stated that the team would have worked on Fallout or Ultima if not for Baldur’s Gate.
  • The developer eventually picked Baldur’s Gate because the license was free after Black Isle Studios shut down.

Larian Studios made a huge name for itself after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Working with Wizards of the Coast, the team has become one of the industry’s biggest names thanks to its exceptional skills in crafting RPGs.

However, CEO Swen Vincke recently highlighted that the team’s future could have been very different. Before its work on Baldur’s Gate began, the team was interested in two other IPs, including Fallout.

Why it matters: The Fallout series is one of the biggest names in the RPG genre. As such, a potential take on the series from Larian Studios would certainly have been interesting.

Swen Vincke recently discussed his studio’s history with Edge magazine. In the interview, the CEO reflected back on the studioโ€™s background of looking for an IP to create an RPG for.

At the time, Larian Studios wanted to create AAA projects that would help it reach a wider audience and find more success. When considering IPs for games, the CEO pointed to Fallout and Ultima.

It would have been Ultima, it would have been Fallout, it would have been Baldur’s Gate.

Unfortunately, the team was never able to work with Bethesda, but Larian Studios’ take on Fallout would certainly lead to an interesting game.

It is important to note that the earlier Fallout games were much different. They featured turn-based combat with an action-point system, making them closer to the type of project Swen Vincke typically works on.

Nonetheless, the studio eventually worked on Baldur’s Gate because there wasn’t much else to choose from. Years of work culminated in Baldur’s Gate 3 winning Game of the Year and sweeping all industry awards last year.

Larian Studios is now moving forward with high spirits. Its next project is not another Baldur’s Gate title, but the developer believes it has the potential to be better than anything it has released so far.

Baldur’s Gate 4 is set to move forward with a different developer, but it remains to be seen if it will reach similar heights without Swen Vincke and his incredibly talented studio.
